Deficiency can lead to anemia and affect several bodily functions and your overall health. Due to menstruation, women are at a higher risk of being iron deficient. The recommended daily dietary allowance is 18 milligrams for women between the age of 19 and 50, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For pregnant women, it is 27 milligram, while adult men require around 8 milligrams. Here are some signs that you are deficient and need to eat more iron-rich foods
Exhaustion and fatigue
If you are feeling extreme exhaustion or experiencing fatigue you may not be getting enough key nutrients into your body. One of the reasons you are feeling tired and exhausted is because your body cells are not receiving enough oxygen due to deficiency of iron and it is affecting your energy level. Another sign is that you may feel weak, tired, sluggish and unable to concentrate. Get your hemoglobin levels check as iron deficiency also affects the production of hemoglobin, which is required to carry oxygen to all parts of your body.
You look pale
Your skin becomes pale when you are iron deficient because your body doesn?t have enough hemoglobin, which gives the blood the red color. Your skin will look healthy and rosy when the hemoglobin levels are correct. If you are not sure about your skin color, check your gums and inside of your lower lip and lower eyelid. If the skin there looks pale, you need to eat more iron-rich foods.
Hair loss is another symptom of iron deficiency. Your hair starts falling when it is not getting enough nourishment and oxygen. With less iron in your body, the blood will not carry the required amount of oxygen. This results in less hair growth. Normally, you lose around 100 strands of hair every day, if you are experiencing excessive hair loss then you might want to modify your diet , which can reduce hair loss.
You crave non-food substance
This one seems weird. If you suddenly crave eating paper or chalk, you might be iron deficient. These are known as pica cravings, they also can occur in children. Some speculate that pica cravings are the body?s attempt to obtain?vitamins or minerals?that are missing through normal food consumption. You may also find yourself eating ice more often.
